BH4SCHOOLS RECOMMENDS #4
International educator and film historian Sandra Shevey reflects upon the image of blacks in Hollywood films from the golden age to date. Whilst it is assumed that all plays played servants there were any number of black actors who defied stereotype such as Freddie Washington (Bette Davis`s favourite actress), Lena Horne, Canada Lee, Ruby Dee, and Paul Robeson.
Sandra also discusses others who fought along with blacks in the struggle for fair film /theatre representation such as Mae West who defied racism by casting a black as her leading man; Otto Kahn; Horace Liveright; and many, many more.
Sandra also can discuss how difficult it was in the 1970s to get an American publication to accept an interview with a black; and whilst having interviewed some blacks such as Tina Turner and others, she is annoyed she was never able to sell an interview with Billy Dee Williams.
Blacks have managed to change things somewhat for themsleves as more and more get into positions of power; but Sandra is still waiting for a black woman to grace the cover of `Vogue` both of whose parents are black.
This lecture is ideal for schools, groups, societies, etc.
