BH4SCHOOLS CITED BY THE DFES
Contextualising History
BASA (The Black and Asian Studies Association) introduced us to the work of Dan Lyndon, Head of History at Henry Compton School, Fulham, whose approach mainstreaming black history has also helped raise the achievement of black pupils in the school. An example of mainstreaming he uses is Queen Elizabeth 1’s attempts to repatriate the ‘Blackmoores’.
The above quote comes from the 'Citizenship & Diversity' report published by the DFES on January 25 2007. The author of the report, Keith Ajegbo, met myself, Hakim Adi and John Siblon (from BASA - the Black and Asian Studies Association) at the DFES a few months ago. I was impressed by his commitment to furthering a multicultural British History being taught in schools, and the comments that the media have picked up on the report suggest that this is an important focus of the report (Lessons on slave trade and empire to teach pupils 'British identity' from the Guardian, although unsuprisingly other newspapers are less supportive How British are you? from the Daily Telegraph)
