BH4SCHOOLS @ BETT

BettYesterday I ran a session at the BETT show at Olympia talking about how ICT can be used to teach Black and Asian British History. There were about 40 people at the session which was a lot better than the four who were there at the start! It was no surprise how few people had heard of many of the characters that I was talking about. I spoke briefly about William Cuffay the Black Chartist, and Olaudah Equiano mentioning some exciting news that a new edition of stamps are soon to be published by the Royal Mail which include Equiano and Ignatius Sancho to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Slave Trade in March 2007. Most of the talk focused on the use of webquests (essentially online lessons using higher order thinking skills to guide pupils through directed research) and in particular, my favourite the Black and Asian soldiers of the First World War Webquest.  The session was well received and I'll be doing something similar in Liverpool in March.
