BH4SCHOOLS RECOMMENDS #1
CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
Tony Kushner
Louisiana, 1963, in the immediate aftermath of the Kennedy assassination. Caroline, a black maid to a southern Jewish family, is struggling to keep afloat both emotionally and economically, while the young son of her employer tries to make sense of the world following the death of his mother.
Tony Kushner, author of multi-award-winning Angels in America, set this intimate story in turbulent times, addressing big questions about race and human rights, with a thrilling musical score by Jeanine Tesori. Tony award-winning George C. Wolfe, director of the Broadway production, makes his National Theatre debut.
The 23-strong cast includes Tonya Pinkins who received huge critical acclaim for her portrayal of Caroline in the Broadway production, and Clive Rowe who has appeared in Carousel, Guys and Dolls (National Theatre) and Simply Heavenly (Young Vic Theatre).
'An extraordinary new musical. The music evokes some of the torrential quality of Porgy and Bess. You feel that mixture of terror and rapture that arrives on those rare occasions in theatre and in life when you genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen next.'
