PREPARING FOR BHM

Preparations are already in place to make this year's Black History Month at my school, Henry Compton, the biggest and the best so far. After the disappointment of having to cancel our 'Raising Horizons' event last October, I am more determined than ever to get a really interesting range of speakers this time. The event is split into two parts; Our invited guests (role models from different communities) spend the morning with a small cohort of Gifted and Talented pupils, who interview the guests about the critical people and critical moments in their lives that have led them to where they are today. The second part is with a larger group of students (Year 10 and or 11), who make up the audience for a Question Time style format, throwing questions at our guests about life in multicultural Britain today.

This year the event is taking place on October 11 and so far I have had confirmations from some really impressive people and organisations: Dr Hakim Adi - Reader in the History of Africa and the African Diaspora at Middlesex University; Arthur Torrington, OBE, Secretary of The Equiano Society and the Windrush Foundation; Operation Black Vote; Denis Fernando from the National Assembly Against Racism; Ira Baptiste, from the Brand and Culture Team at Vodafone; Elliott Tucker, filmmaker and founder of Film for Humanity; and Makeda Coaston, manager for the London Mayor's Commission on the African and Asian Heritage

As well as the interviews that will be carried out in the morning there will be a group of younger students who will be making a short film about the event, and reporters from the school newpaper who will be interviewing guests and students about the day.
